Though there is plenty to do in this great metropolis, there are bound to be times when you would like to get away. Luckily, Mumbai has some of the most stunning places for a great weekend getaway. Here are some of the best places for a weekend getaway close to the city.

If you enjoy bird-watching, this is a great place for you. About 60km from Mumbai on the Mumbai-Goa highway, the Karnala Bird Sanctuary is home to 150 species of birds and many migrate here as well. The sanctuary is located on the Sahayadri range, making it a lovely holiday spot for families. If you don’t have the luxury of a two day weekend, this is close enough for a day trip too.

Pawna Lake:

Located about 10 km away from Kamshet, this artificial lake is very popular for a weekend out of town. The best way to get back to nature after spending so much time in the big city is to spend the night on the banks of the lake camping. There are many options for camping that include BBQ, stargazing, bon fires and music.

Karjat:

If you’re more interested in an active getaway, Karjat is perfect for you. With treks of varying difficulty levels, this is a wonderful place to be one with nature. Karjat is on the basin of the Ulhas river and offers spectacular views of hills, ancient forts and of course the river.

Matheran:

While the North Indians have Manali and Shimla, Matheran has always been a favourite of the Mumbaikar. Located on top of the Western Ghats at a height of 2516 feet, this is one of the oldest hill stations. Apart from the scenic views of the Ghats, one of the major attractions is the toy train between Neral and Matheran that is absolutely unmissable.

Kamshet:

Treks, bird watching and mountains not your style, then try Kamshet. The most popular paragliding destination in India, this is a popular destination for not just those that live in Maharashtra but around the country too. Kamshet is about 16 km from Lonavala and Khandala that are always worth a visit too.
