Mysore, or Mysuru as it is now called, is a beautiful city in Karnataka close to Bengaluru. Known around the world for its sandalwood, rosewood and silks, this now modern city retains its old-world charm. According to legend, in the ancient days the city was ruled by a demon. From temple visits in the morning to shopping souvenirs in evening, here’s how to make the most of a day in Mysore.
Morning
Start your day by visiting the Chamundi Hills which is very famous for Chamundeswari temple dedicated to Goddess Chamundeswari, an incarnation of Goddess Parvathi who took this form to destroy Mahishasura. Moving further, you will find two popular palaces, one is the Mysore Palace that is often referred to as ‘City of Palaces’, a former palace of the royal family of Mysore that is still their official residence. Get yourself a tour guide who will help you understand the history in a better way. The other is Jagan Mohan Palace which houses the Jayachamarajendra Art Gallery and one of the most preserved art galleries of Karnataka. Then head to St. Philomena Cathedral, one of the top places to visit in Mysore. The church was constructed in 1956 in a Neo Gothic style and its architecture was inspired by the Cologne Cathedral in Germany.
Afternoon
After having a nice lunch, you can visit Srirangapatna which is a half an hour ride from the city. Here you will find a lot of places to explore like Ranganathittu Bird sanctuary, known for its garden beauty, boating and foreign birds. It is one of the largest bird sanctuaries in the state, or visit Daria Dault Bagh also famous as Tipu Sultan’s Summer Palace, built in Indo-Islamic style and mostly made out of teakwood.
Evening
To explore this city like a local, you can go for shopping or have local food. For shopping, do visit Cauvery Arts & Crafts Emporium that offers a wide range of artefacts related to Mysore heritage or Devaraja market which is one of the oldest markets with over 800 shops. No trip of Mysore is complete without tasting the famous Mysore Pak – a sweet delicacy. Two of the most famous sweet stores for Mysore Pak are Guru Sweets and New Bombay Tiffanys.
